Episode 6: Everything in Common
INTERVIEW WITH STEVE BELL
Discussion Questions
Steve does not agree with Travis, instead saying that the passage we’re looking at can’t be dismissed as impractical and citing Mary’s song as a supporting example. Read Luke 1:46-55. Is Steve accurately reflecting Mary’s song when he talks about reshuffling resources? Is he right in quoting David Bentley Hart, who likens Mary to the Bolsheviks?
Steve may not be aware of the ugly history between the Bolsheviks and Mennonites. Do you find this comparison offensive? Is it fair or wildly off course?
Steve is passionate about his views on this passage, saying the message is unambiguous—the words are prescriptive. Whether or not you agree with Steve on that, is it appropriate that the passage unsettles us?
