INTERVIEW WITH DR. LAYTON FRIESEN
Discussion Questions
Layton says we “owe it to the state to remind them… [that Christ has defeated the powers].” How do you imagine we should do that?
He also says that when we break the law or refuse to cooperate with the state, we are not proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ to the state—we’re just being a problem for the state. Some Christians would argue that it is precisely when we refuse to obey the law, provided it’s for a good reason, that we are proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ to the state. That we occasionally need to “flex our muscle” so that the state is put on notice that we serve a different master. What do you think?
If almost every state has the ability to create order and the church’s only real work is to proclaim the kingdom of God, is any political involvement on our part necessary?
Are the careers designed to control chaos, violence and corruption legitimate careers for a Christian? Are they desirable careers for a Christian?
