Episode 10: Kleine Gemeinde
INTERVIEW WITH DR. LAYTON FRIESEN
Discussion Questions
When Layton served as Conference Pastor in the EMC, he noticed that churches were impatient with congregational governance. Is that your experience as well?
Do you agree that congregationalism stifles leadership and mission? If so, how or why does it do that?
Is it possible for the opposite to sometimes be true—that congregationalism generates mission and excitement? Could it generate leadership?
When Layton is listing the traits of congregationalism (it’s clunky, awkward and slow) is he basically describing the way relationships work? If so, are these traits bugs or are they features? Does our impatience reflect a fault in our organizational structure or a fault in our corporate perspective?
